Equal Pay for Latina Lawyers

Today, October 5, 2023, is Latina Equal Pay Day™. A day to reflect, not celebrate.

Latinas in the legal profession are not immune from pay inequity. Despite the fact that Latinas make up 9.4% of the total US population in 2023, Latina lawyers only make up 1.4% of all Fortune 1000 general counsels and less than 1% of all law firm equity partners.  That means there is an astonishing 67% gap in the representation of Latina versus White male partners.

So what is my advice to fellow and future Lawtinas?

#1 Seek Mentorship

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. The worst someone can say is no. But what if they yes? That “yes” may change the course of your life and career.

#2 Advocate for Yourself and Your Worth

Recognize that your time has value. It is possible to do something that is “good for your professional development” AND be paid for it or be given appropriate credit for your participation come bonus time.

#3 Open Opportunities for Others and Contribute to Systemic Change

We need to push forward the power of this pipeline by connecting others within our networks to lift each other up. There are so many amazing organizations working towards this goal.

Do not limit your network to other lawyers.  Getting outside of the legal bubble from time to time can benefit your mental health it gives you the opportunity to help Latinas in other industries. We will all rise together.

#4 Remember That Your Goals Are YOUR OWN

I know sometimes Latinas may feel pressure to get a particular type of job or a particular title. But this is YOUR life, YOUR career, and you have the right to do whatever is best for YOU.

How does this relate to pay? Because we are most successful when we play to our strengths, operate within our "zones of genius," and work towards goals we are passionate about.

The Lawtina community is strong and loyal. We are already proud of all of your successes and we will be here to help you reach your goals. You have nothing to prove to us.

#5 Do Not Limit Your Potential

You may be destined for something that you can’t even imagine yet. I speak from experience. I have been in rooms that I never thought that I would be in. I have been able to provide for my family in ways I never imagined by leaving myself open to opportunities–both inside and outside of the law.

As always, I believe in you! Con ganas, poder, y orgullo, siempre seremos latinas.
